Psst. Take the size quiz instead of reading below, and we'll suggest a size for you.

Step 1: Measure your nipple

Watch this video to see how to measure your nipple for Milkdrop products.

Step 2: Choose your size

Ordering a Milkdrop Pump

Choose the size pump that is the next biggest size from your nipple.

So if you measure:

  • Up to 15mm (0.6") choose XS
  • 15-20mm (0.6-0.8" choose S
  • 20-25mm (0.8-1.0") choose M
  • 25mm (1.0-1.2") or over choose L

If you're between sizes, choose the larger size. We will swap out a different cushion size (free of charge) if you find you need it, but it's best to go with a slightly larger flange size, and then reduce it with a cushion.

If you are measuring 25mm+, please contact us at support@milkdroppumps.com so we can double-check your pump setup.

All Milkdrop Pumps come with flange sizes or inserts and cushions. When they arrive try different combinations to see what is most comfortable. You may even find that the flange alone (without the cushion) gets the best out of your body - everyone is different!

Ordering just Milkdrop cushions

Milkdrop cushions fit Milkdrop Pumps best, but they do fit other pumps.

Check our compatible pumps list.

Once you've checked your pump is compatible, to get the right setup, you will need the right cushion size, and if you're using a traditional (non-wearable pump) then you'll also need the right flange size beneath.

Choosing your cushion size.

Choose the size cushion that is the next biggest size from your nipple.

So if you measure:

  • Up to 15mm (0.6"), choose XS
  • 15-20mm (0.6-0.8", choose S
  • 20-25mm (0.8-1.0"), choose M
  • 25mm (1.0-1.2") or over, choose L

If you're between sizes, choose the smaller size to start. We offer 30-days to change your cushion size once if you need.

If you are measuring 25mm+, please contact us at support@milkdroppumps.com so we can double-check your pump setup.

Choosing your flange size.

Milkdrop cushions will fit on any flange size. Most pumps will come with a standard flange size of 24mm, but you can purchase other flange sizes or sizing inserts to bring the flange size down.

Here's how to decide which flange size to use:

  • If you don't have elastic nipples (you'd know this if your nipple tissue stretches right to the end of the pump), then you can use your cushion on the standard 24mm. You can also use it on any other flange sizes if you've already been fitted for those!
  • If you do have elastic nipples, use your cushion on the flange size that is closest to your nipple. This is to stop your nipple from swelling once it passes through the cushion.
  • The best flange size for you is the one that is the comfiest and allows you to express the most milk. The best way to figure out your size is to test some different sizes in person. But if you aren't able to access flanges to try, then you can figure out a good place to start, by adding 1-3mm to your nipple measurement and choosing the next largest available flange size. So if you measure 14mm across, you could start with a breast pump flange anywhere between 15 and 17mm. Remember, this is just a start, you may need to change it up if it's uncomfortable or you're not able to get much milk. If you're after more detail, read this step-by-step guide on flange sizing!

Once you have your flange, then you can stretch a Milkdrop cushion over top for extra comfort.

Check below for your size (nipple width), and the flanges that it works best with:

For non-elastic nipples:

  • XS (<15mm) cushion can be used on any flange size up to 28mm
  • S (15-20mm) cushion can be used on any flange size up to 28mm
  • M (20-25mm) cushion can be used on any flange size up to 28mm
  • L* (25mm+) cushion can be used on 32mm flange size and larger

For elastic nipples:

  • XS (<15mm) cushion can be used on any flange size up to 19mm
  • S (15-20mm) cushion can be used on any flange size 17-21mm
  • M (20-25mm) cushion can be used on any flange size 22-27mm
  • L* (25mm+) cushion can be used on 27nn+

Step 3: Check the FAQs

Do I measure before or after pumping?

Measure before pumping. Pumping can swell your nipple, which means you might measure too large!

Which part of the nipple do I measure?

We're looking for the measurement across your nipple at its base, where it meets the areola.

Common mistakes are to measure the areola or the flange size - but we're just looking for your nipple only measurement here!

If you have flat or inverted nipples, try to measure where the nipple skin looks different from the areola - it might be a little lumpier. Try to stimulate your nipple to bring it out slightly to find where to measure.

What if I'm exactly between sizes?

It can get a bit tricky figuring out sizing if you're right on the edge.

If you're ordering just cushions only, then start with the smaller of the two sizes. We offer a free size switch within 30 days of your order.

If you're ordering a pump, then start with the larger of the two sizes. This will mean you receive a slightly larger flange, which you can then use a smaller cushion on. Again, we can send you a size switch within 30 days of your order for the cushion if you need it.

Which pumps are compatible with Milkdrop cushions?

Our cushions are designed specifically for Milkdrop Pumps, and fit those best.

However, they are compatible with other brands. Check if your pump is on the compatible list.

Still confused with sizing?

We get it. There's enough to figure out with a new baby. The size quiz takes out the guesswork for you, and even recommends a pump for you if you're not sure.
